Why come to Widnes Market?
130 YEARS AGO the people of Widnes did not have the luxury or convenience of fridges, freezers or pre-packed and frozen foods. Everything was bought fresh from local suppliers, probably on a daily basis. Their diet was varied with plenty of fresh fish, vegetables, fruit, cheeses and dairy products.
The growing need for people to buy fresh products regularly, brought about the birth of local markets and in 1875 Widnes Market was established, thanks to the foresight of Major Cross and the local Board.
